Ecstasy Offers Blood Cancer a New Hope

Scientists have claimed, a modified version ecstasy (MDMA) - could help with treatment for blood cancer.

Scientists at the University of Birmingham shows significant success in "redesigning the designer drug" for potential use as a cancer-killing agent in the treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

"They started to look more lipophilic, that is, they were attracted to the lipids that make up cell walls. This would make them more 'soapy' so they would end up getting into the cancer cells more easily and possibly even start dissolving them.

The new work builds on the scientists' discovery six years ago that more than half of the cancers in white blood cells they looked at responded in the test tube to the growth-suppressing properties of psychotropic drugs.

He added: "This is an exciting next step towards using a modified form of MDMA to help people suffering from blood cancer.

"While we would not wish to give people false hope, the results of this research hold the potential for improvement in treatments in years to come."

Dr David Grant, of the national charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research , which part-funded the research, said: "The prospect of being able to target blood cancer with a drug derived from ecstasy is a genuinely exciting proposition.

"Many types of lymphoma remain hard to treat and non-toxic drugs which are both effective and have few side effects are desperately needed. Further work is required but this research is a significant step forward in developing a potential new cancer drug."

The team now hopes to go on to develop pre-clinical studies.

Suicide Bombers Hit UK Offices

Suicide bombers have attacked the British Council offices in Kabul on the public holiday marking Afghanistan's independence from Britain.

At least three people were killed in an initial attack.

"Eight people, mostly police, are killed and 10 others injured," Siddiq Siddiqui of Afghanistan's interior ministry said.
"Apache helicopters have been circling around the building and the battle is still ongoing."

It is unclear if any Britons have been killed or injured in the attack.

The gossip claims “The Bill O'Reilly Factor” host tried to get Nassau County police to conduct an internal investigation on an officer he believed to be sleeping with his wife. Fox News preemptively attempts to undermine Gawker’s credibility.

According to Gawker, the top-rated Fox News host is the prime mover behind a highly irregular police investigation in his Long Island hometown. A detective working for internal affairs was allegedly asked to meet with private investigators who were trying to build a case against another detective, who had become romantically involved with Bill O’Reilly’s wife while the two were separated. This, by the way, is the promised bombshell that prompted Fox News’s bizarre and dishonest reports about how Gawker is “dying.”

To build a case that News Corp. constitutes a corrupt organization under anti-racketeering statutes, prosecutors have to show that there exists a pattern of wrongdoing sanctioned at the highest levels of the company.

I’ve said I consider it unlikely that such a pattern can be established. But the charges against Bill O’Reilly make it that much less unlikely. As Gawker notes, his boss, Fox News chief Roger Ailes, has a habit of using local cops as though they’re his personal employees.

Gawker went on to speculate on the state of Bill O'Reilly's marriage to his wife of 15 years, Maureen McPhilmy O'Reilly and offered evidence that Mrs. O'Reilly had moved out on the TV host and was keeping a separate residence.

Perhaps to pre-empt the negative press on a story it knew to be coming, Fox News launched an out-of-left-field attack on the website last week on its show Fox and Friends. (Though this wouldn't be the first time Fox News has bashed Gawker on the air.)

During a segment on once-trendy websites that are past their prime, host Steve Doocy claimed Gawker traffic was down 75 percent in the last year.

Not so, said Gawker writer John Cook, who also wrote the Bill O'Reilly piece. He posted a chart detailing Gawker's traffic numbers, which are up more than 50 percent compared to last year, with unique visitors staying about the same.

Cook claimed the attack was launched because Fox News wanted to undermine the site's credibility before it published the Bill O'Reilly story.

"I'm speechless," said 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert. "I thought she was looking really good. I'm disappointed for Venus Williams, and I'm disappointed for the U.S. Open. Venus Williams would have had to be 100 percent healthy to win this match."

Venus Williams has struggled with hip and knee injuries plus a lingering viral illness whose aftereffects may well have caused her to pull out. After beating Vesna Dolonts 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round, Venus Williams was vague, even evasive in describing her illness and the specifics of her preparation for the U.S. Open. Now we know why.

Apple said Steve Jobs submitted his resignation to the board of directors on Wednesday and "strongly recommended" that the board name Mr. Cook as his successor. Mr. Jobs, 56 years old, has been elected chairman of the board and Mr. Cook will join the board, effective immediately, the company said.

Art Levinson, chairman of Genentech and an Apple board member, said in a statement that the board "has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO." He added that Steve Jobs will "continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

And though one person was arrested for starting a fight outside the stadium gates, "The policing aspect of the game was fine, as we all knew it would be, quite honestly. It was kind of a no-brainer. We don't tend to have problems here, especially during the preseason."

Texans optimistic Arian Foster will be ready for season opener. Arian Foster, who led the NFL in rushing in 2010, re-aggravated a hamstring injury Saturday in an exhibition against the 49ers in San Francisco. Houston Coach Gary Kubiak says Arian Foster should be OK for the September 11 opener with Indianapolis.

Texans running back Arian Foster, last season's NFL rushing champion, was forced out against the 49ers after aggravating a left hamstring injury during the first quarter. It's the same hamstring that Foster hurt during his first practice of training camp.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Saturday night that he is "hopeful" Arian Foster hamstring will be ready for Week 1. Kubiak did confirm Arian Foster's latest hamstring injury is to the same leg left that cost him 11 days of camp earlier this month.

Arian Foster was born on August 24, 1986, he is an American football running back for the Houston Texans. He was signed by the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and was added to their active roster from the practice squad on November 17, 2009. He played college football at Tennessee. Foster is known for his signature bow when he scores a touchdown.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge has been reopened to all vehicles beside tractor trailers, Anne Arundel County Emergency Management announced via Twitter. Tractor trailers are now prohibited from crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Key Bridge in Baltimore has been placed under a "wind warning."

"The wind was so strong, the carousel and the Ferris wheel were actually turning by themselves," Berk said. "It was just eerie to hear the metal kind of squeaking by itself."

The meteorologist said he still expects most of Maryland to receive 2–6 inches of rain.
"It almost looks like the eye might be moving a little bit east," said Berk, who is working from the Hilton hotel in Ocean City. "The biggest storm surge will be in the lower portion of the Chesapeake."

Hurricane Irene is still headed toward the northeast megalopolises, a Category 1 hurricane with a major storm surge and inland flooding threat. Storm surge is a destructive element of a hurricane that is likely to happen.

An update from the local (The Cedar Island Ferry Terminal) measured sustained winds of 90 mph, gusting to 110 mph at 7:19am, and a trained spotter on Atlantic Beach measured sustained winds of 85 mph, gusting to 101 mph at 10:35 am. The Hurricane Hunters measured 80 mph winds over water at the time of landfall.

Lightning

Lightning is a nature phenomenon that is very exiting and terifying to see all at once. The dictionary said that lightning is an atmospheric electrostatic discharge followed by thunder, which usually occurs during thunderstorms.

It appears that a lightning strike started the fire near the Hi Country Estates neighborhood, 13775 South. 7530 West, and it quickly grew. Ann White said her property lies adjacent to where the shed was destroyed. Her husband was outside working.

"He was working on a well, and it blew him out of the hole," White said.

"You feel like you're punched in the stomach," said Bunker, who has lived in the neighborhood for five years. "You never really worry about your home until it could be taken away."

At least 20 homes were under voluntary evacuation in an area of 100 acres. The fire burned a smaller area enclosed by a cluster of structures.

Hurricane Irene could hit North Carolina's Outer Banks on Saturday afternoon with winds around 115 mph (185 kph) and it's predicted to go up the East Coast, dumping rain from Virginia to New York City.

Airline flights and events were canceled or postponed in advance of Hurricane Irene, a dangerous storm that is expected to bring widespread damage, power outages and flooding from North Carolina to New England.

In anticipation, Amtrak and major U.S. airlines began canceling routes and flights or putting them on a watch list. American Airlines canceled 126 flights Thursday, mostly out of Miami and the Bahamas, an airline spokesman said. Airlines are expected to cancel more flights Friday.

A monstrous Hurricane Irene tightened its aim on the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday, threatening 65 million people along a shore-hugging path from North Carolina to New England. One of the nation's top experts called it his "nightmare" scenario.

"One of my greatest nightmares was having a major hurricane go up the whole Northeast Coast," Max Mayfield, the center's retired director, told The Associated Press.

In a normal hurricane, tropical storm-force winds extend about 150 miles from the eye. Irene's winds extend nearly 250 miles.

He said the damage will probably climb into billions of dollars: "This is going to have an impact on the United States economy."

The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said damages could exceed most previous storms because so many people live along the East Coast and property values are high.
