College Football Rankings 2011 updates. After watching a week’s worth of games, the college football polls carry enough weight in who will be left standing at the end of the season that it matters greatly how teams are ranked in the preseason. They will likely drop out of the College Football Rankings, not because they lost to a better football team who was ranked much higher, even by a Boise St. Denier™ like yours truly, but because they didn't look like a top 25 football team in that game.
The play on the field has spoken volumes teams and it’s clear that certain teams will be jumping up in the polls rather quickly. Here is the top two College Football Rankings:
1. Ohio St. Buckeyes (16 USA Today, 18 AP)
The Buckeyes destroyed the Akron Zips by a 42-0 count in Week 1. The defense performed at the sort of level you expect from the Buckeyes. Lots of pressure on the QB, terrific open-field tackling and airtight coverage in the secondary. New head coach Luke Fickell has the team looking forward and forgetting about the rough offseason. With a manageable schedule and a very large chip on their shoulders…the Buckeyes are a much more dangerous bunch then most expected.
2. South Carolina Gamecocks (12 USA Today, 12 AP)
The Gamecocks had question marks surrounding their QB situation heading into the season. Stephen Garcia has had a ton of troubles off the field and his status for 2011 was very iffy. The team spotted the Pirates a two TD lead, but the offense stormed back and showed why they are going to be one of the top in the country.
